- LWCC Constitution being amended
The LWCC Constitution, activities and objectives are currently under review, with a view to possible amendments and improvements. - Literature review on veld fire damage to livestock and treatment
RMRD-SA had agreed to fund a literature review of ways to categorize and treat livestock that had been caught in veldfires. The Chairman said that until such time that the review had been completed, the LWCC would keep their guidelines on veldfires and livestock damage on the website. - Literature review of the welfare implications of transporting livestock by sea
The Chairman drafted a potential request to the RMRD-SA to have a comprehensive impartial literature review of the livestock welfare implications of exporting live animals by sea for slaughter. A lot of information was available but an unbiased party had to do a proper literature review, to collect as much information as possible. - Pain relief for livestock: a registration of a special product being investigated
During the LWCC meeting Dr Hobson said they were trying to get Buccalgesic registered. They were working with trial laboratories in Australia to get it approved. He thanked the LWCC for assisting and putting them in contact with the right contacts in terms of registration. He said that progress had been made and there was a desire to get it registered in South Africa. This was good news although obviously there was still a long way to go, but it seemed promising. It was registered for use in sheep but not in goats. That was the reason why they wanted the registration for goats. It was an easy and practical application, which a farmer could do without being invasive in terms of having to give injections that could be time consuming. It was an easy way to administer pain relief which removed the barrier of having to give an injection. It was a simple thing that anybody could do as it was a mucosal absorption. - VELD FIRES AND LIVESTOCK: GUIDELINES FOR FARMERS

- Role of SAPPO on the latest ASF outbreak – “SAPPO recently toured the area of the EC where African Swine Fever was recently diagnosed. It is apparent that it will be extremely difficult to pinpoint when the disease began as cause/s for mortalities are not diagnosed regularly. The farming practices in the affect area include allowing pigs to roam and semi-confinement. Keeping pigs is an important way of life and income stream for rural communities of the EC and thus the health and welfare of their animals is important to them. SAPPO was impressed with, and supports the endeavours of EC veterinary services in ascertaining the extent of the outbreak. The level of knowledge and training of local livestock farmers by both State Veterinarians and Animal Health Technicians was more than satisfying. SAPPO is able to assist with provision of material to improve awareness in the fight to reduce the spread of ASF. These include short pictographic videos highlighting important aspects of preventing ASF getting into an owners pigs.”

Traditional and religious slaughter methods
The Livestock Welfare Coordinating Committee recognises the right of groups and communities to religious freedom and to practice their customs as protected by the South African Constitution. When such practises and customs involve the slaughter of animals for whatever purpose, we believe that the methods used must be reasonable, humane and in harmony with current internationals concepts of animal welfare. It is incumbent on all groups and communities to ensure that their slaughter practices cause the least possible degree of distress, pain and suffering, and that these practices should be modified where necessary to meet the goals of animal welfare while conforming to the spirit of the religious or customary practice in use.
Livestock Welfare issues to be considered with livestock predator control
The Livestock Welfare Coordinating Committee recognises the problems and sensitivities that surround the issue of controlling damage- causing animals that prey on livestock and strongly recommends that there should be a balanced, sustainable approach which causes the least amount of harm and suffering. However we must emphasize that the process of predation can involve severe pain and suffering to affected livestock and that this aspect of predator control must be taken into account when deciding on the necessity or acceptability of measures that are used. Covering only the welfare of wild animals, or ecological concerns, is not enough. The welfare of livestock that can be severely maimed in the process of predation must be give equal consideration.
Electronic version of Bull and Boar stunning guidelines
At the May or August 2010 meeting of the LWCC, RMAA presented a very useful guideline on correct techniques to stun large bulls and boars for slaughter. We would like to put this on our website. If this is acceptable, I request that you send an electronic version for easier placement. We can acknowledge you as the source unless you prefer to be anonymous.
